Commissions
Often I am approached for commission work.
This allows me to create an artwork particularly suited to the individual clients needs.
Buddhist practitioners and centres specify sacred pieces that suit their tradition, practice and intention.
With commissioned work I discuss the different aspects of the thangka so as to create an individualised plan with regard to size, colours, and details. I show examples of previous artworks to assist in the design.
All material is silk, brocade and gold thread. The material is made by hand in Varanasi, India by traditional craftsman who have been trading in silks with Tibetans for generations. I always purchase the best quality possible. 1 meter of this material can cost up to $450.
Because each piece is created to the highest quality and skill with different sizes and degrees of intricacies, a time frame is estimated during the initial discussion.
The price for my thangkas depends on the amount of work and material involved.
On average a single thangka will take me 3-5 months of full time work. Saying that, I have spent more than 1 year on a large and very detailed thangka for a Monastery in Ladakh.
An average sized thangka may cost between $1500 and $6000.Smaller pieces such as a Lotus or Mantra can be completed within 2 weeks and cost roughly $300-$1000.
Discounts may be given for a series of thangkas and for monasteries and monastic sangha.
