urgyenthangka2After leaving Tibet and arriving in India Urgyen decided to take formal training in the sacred art of thangka making and joined Namsa Chenmo a traditional thangka school run by Phuntsok Tsering who is the renowned robe and thangka maker of H.H. The Dalai Lama.

The school is situated in Dharamsala and aims to preserve the skills of Tibetan art that has been passed down from master to student for hundreds of years.

Urgyens training in appliqué thangka making spanned over 5 years with over 100 supervised appliqué art pieces being completed.

urgyenthangka3In 2004 after finally gaining his mastery level Urgyen graduated with the hope to continue this speciality art and contribute to the preservation of the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Tibetan people.

Urgyen has established his workshop in Qld Australia, where he works on individual thangkas that can take from 1- 9 months to complete depending on the size and detail

Using his special skills with materials such as the finest quality hand loomed and dyed brocades, silks and threads imported from Varanasi, Urgyen creates pieces that are regarded by high lamas, art experts and critics as exceptional, beautiful and full of meaning.
